ASA SHERMAN’S POSSIBLE PARENTAGE AND ANCESTRY
Asa Sherman named two of his kids Benoni Sherman and Lois Sherman (who married William Maitland). These name identities indicate that Asa Sherman is possibly the grandson of Benoni Sherman and Margaret Havens of North Kingstown, Washington Co., Rhode Island. Benoni and Margaret had a kid named Lois Sherman who married David Bates. If it’s proven that Asa Sherman is the son of Lowry Sherman or Captain Nathaniel Sherman, then Asa Sherman would be the grandson of Benoni Sherman and Margaret Havens.
Here is what is known about Lowry Sherman: He married Hannah Matteson on September 7, 1761 in Conventry, Kent Co., RI and had a son named Nathan, who was born on December 18, 1762 in Coventry, Kent Co., Rhode Island.
Here is what is known about Captain Nathaniel Sherman:
---He was a soldier in the Revolution. A "Havens' Sherman enlisted at Exeter, R. I. for three months Sept. 18, 1776 (R.I.V.R. p. 252) Captain Nathaniel Havens Sherman was in command of the 4th Company, North Kingston Regt., Rhode Island Militia in 1781 and 1783. (Civil & Military Records, Rhode Island Vol. 1 1647-1800 p. 404 for 1781 service and p. 422 for 1783.)
His will was badly damaged by fire. I have searched for years for information on this family and am still searching. It is possible that he is the one in Ballstown, Albany Co., New York in the Census of 1790. If so, at that time he had: 2 males over 16; 5 males under 16; 7 females over 16. F.D.S.1685; R.I.V.R.: R.V.S.
---"The Ancestors and Descendants of Philip Shearman, the first secretary and recorder of the colony of Rhode Island" by Frank Dempster Sherman, 1908. She sent copies of several pages. It refers to his will, proved May 9, 1826, Wickford, RI. It is badly damaged by fire but talks of his wife Elizabeth; nephew Nathaniel, son of sister, Sarah, wife of Silas Sherman; John R Sherman; and the widow of the late Elijah Sherman. He is titled Captain in many references.
---He married Elizabeth Eldred on October 10, 1773 in North Kingstown, Washington Co., RI and had three known sons: Nathaniel, Elisha, and Benoni. Benoni Sherman was killed in 1848 in Jefferson Co., Indiana by a falling tree. Nathaniel Sherman died May 17, 1858 in Jefferson Co., Indiana.
–-Benoni Sherman who is the son of Captain Nathaniel Sherman, served in the War of 1812 in the 13th Brigade, New York detached militia from Sept. 14 to Hov. 1813. Discharged at Camp near Brownville. References: Census Records; US Archives; Vital Records Jeff. Co., Ind.; Court Records Jef. Co. Ind. May 1848 to Aug. 1850. Feb. Term 1849 p. 307. Some Descendants of Philip Sherman, pub. 1968 by Roy V. Sherman.
Possible grandparents: Benoni Sherman (7-7-1719 in N. Kingstown, RI to 2-24-1768 in N. Kingstown, RI) and Margaret Havens (d. 1775)
Married: 12-24-1741 in N. Kingstown, RI
Children: Lowry (Abt.1742), Avis (m. Joshua Bates 7-29-1764), Captain Nathaniel ( Freelove (m. Joshua Glazier on 9-2-1764), Sarah, Lois (m. David Bates), Margaret (5-2-1755), Soloman (2-15-1760) (m. Sybil Brownell 5-16-1790), Dorcas (1764)
--Benoni Sherman’s Parents: Elisha Sherman (d. Jan 2, 1750 in N. Kingstown, RI) andMary
--Elisha Sherman’s Parents: Eber Sherman (Dec. 1634 in Roxbury, MA d. 1706 in N. Kingstown, RI) and Mary
--Eber Sherman’s Parents were: Philip Sherman (baptized 2-5-1610 in Dedham, Essex Co., England d. 1687 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI) and Sarah Odding
--Philip Sherman’s Parents were: Samuel Sherman (baptized 1-11-1573 in Dedham, Essex Co., England d. 3-2-1615 in Ardleigh, Essex Co., England) and Philippa
--Samuel Sherman’s Parents were: Henry Sherman Jr. (d. Aug. 28, 1610 in Dedham, Essex Co., England) And Susan Lawrence
--Henry Sherman’s Parents were: Henry Sherman Sr. (d. July 25, 1590 in Dedham, Essex Co., England) And Agnes
Is there any state census records on Lois Sherman (Maitland) in anywhere between 1855 and 1885? That would help. I hope that this probable information on Asa Sherman's ancestry will turn this mystery into open documented facts.
