Did Edmund SHERMAN (b. abt 1572, Dedham, co. Essex, Eng.; d. 1641, New Haven, Conn.) marry Joan MAKIN, dau of Tobias?
Good question.
According to Jacobus, HISTORY AND GENEALOGY OF THE FAMILIES OF OLD FAIRFIELD:" He may have m. Joan Makin, dau. of Tobias of Fingringhoe, but the evidence seen does not seem conclusive."Jacobus, one of the most respected genealogists of his, or any, time, was rarely mistaken with his research. If he was hesitant to acknowledge Joan Makin as Edmund Sherman's wife, then there had to be a reason.(Too bad Jacobus did not elaborate on his thinking.)
Nonetheless, most of the published family histories I've seen list Joan Makin as Edmund's wife.Unfortunately, NONE of these genealogies document the evidence and/or proof used to support this listing. One (William H. Powers, POWERS-BANKS ANCESTRY) references the 1610 will of Tobias Makin.Since Tobias Makin's will is neither quoted nor re-printed, it appears (see below) Powers presented his interpretation of Tobias Makin's will.Written in 1921, Jacobus would have had access to the Powers book as well as the will upon which Powers' findings were based.
On the MAKIN GenForum, the following posting (http://genforum.genealogy.com/makin/messages/13.html)regarding Grace, reportedly another dau of Tobias Makin who, reportedly, married Edmund Sherman's brother John, is found:
"I read the TAGs (The Americian Genelogist)1985, Vol 61 which proves by brother Tobias Makin Jr's 1621 will that Grace Makin bc 1585 married an 'unknown' Sherman,(not John who died bef. 1716) 'unlikely' to be Edmund and 'no supporting evidence found'. Her sister Joan Makin bc 1595 married bef. 1621 Richard Stone. John Sherman's wife was proven,(in 1986)to be Grace Ravens (my anc.) not Grace Makin. Tobias Makin Sr's wife was Elizabeth (Westbrome)Makin of Abberton, Essex. d 1596, dtr of Thomas."
Does this come from the TAG article you reference?
The findings, as reported in the above TAG article, would seem to refute the research of William Powers. If you possess a copy of that article, would it be possible for you to post the article's findings as they relate to Edmund Sherman and/or Joan Makin?
I would be interested in knowing exactly what Tobias Makin's will does or does not say.Others on the Makin GenForum indicate a copy of Tobias Makin's will (signed May 14, 1610, proven September 10, 1610) was printed in NEHGR v 50 pg 286-287.Maybe another kind soul will post a transcription of that will.
Thanks for the very complete biography of Edmund Sherman.
