Kate,
I have been looking for the answers to your questions for several years. All I have found on John Bryant is that he appears on the Caswell Co., NC tax lists (Richmond District) until 1785.He's no longer listed in 1786 or later. It seems likely that he and Heathy moved elsewhere, since there are no probate or estate entries for him in the Caswell Co. records.
Regarding the orphan Francis Shearman, for years we thought that Francis was a boy.Last year on a trip to the North Carolina Archives in Raleigh we looked at the microfilm containing the apprenticeship bond for "Francis" and discovered that the text of the bond contains phrases such as "she shall not at any time absent herself from her said Masters service".It is obvious, then, by modern standards, that "Francis" should have been spelled "Frances".In Sept. 1781 she was 7 yrs., 5 months old.Her apprenticeship was due to end on her 18th birthday, in April 1792.We have looked for a marriage record for her, but unfortunately have not found one, nor indeed any further record of her anywhere.
If anyone else has any information that adds to the above, I hope they will share it.
Jim Henderson
