mary this is my uncle who tried and succeeded in tracing down the family in ireland: You might remember at the family reunion, I talked of our trip to Ireland and the family in Ireland. I also handed out a sherlock/roddy family tree and some history. I will send you another copy of this data. Nannie mother and father were both born in Ireland, count Sligo, grew up on separate small farms, nearby, and later, when both separately immergrated to the USA, met once again it their early twenties, in Providence and were married. Nannie mothers maiden name is Roddy. Nannie father is Sherlock. Nannie, when she was a small child, use to send her grandmother in Ireland letters. She was able to find a old letter, (about 70 years old), in her cedarchest, which gave us name and address. We spent 3 days of our holiday in Ireland trying to make the connections. It was not easy, because some of the town names had changed. We tried the local postman to no help, and finnally went to the church records in the small town of Gurteen. We could not find anything of the Roddy, but found that the Sherlock lived about 5 miles away in the cross road of Doon Rock. Gurteen is a small small town with one church and maybe 3 stores, doon rock is only a cross road. Everything is countryside, and small farms. We drove to doon rock and found a address for a current sherlock. A old old, little whitewashed farm house, one chimmey with smoke coming out. We drove up this old dirt driveway, saw shy children playing, and met the owner and his wife. Paul and Deirdre sherlock who would be my distant cousin still live in the old sherlock family farmhouse where Nannie father was born & raised. He supports his family of 5 children with 25 cattle and 2 sheepdogs. He and we knew we had the right family, and we compared old family albums, and pictures. We returned this next day with gifts for all, and had a nice ham/potatoe dinner. We visited the old family cemetary, and asked about the Roddy name, to locate Nannie mother side. Paul called his elderly uncle, discussed the issue and concluded that the roddy homestead as a small house you could see on the distant hill. He called this neighbor whom immediately invited us over for tea. We than visted this house and met Noro Tynan and her elderly mother whom was about nannie age. We all quickly concluded that this was the Roddy family, that Noro remarried to the Tynan name, and her mothers maiden name was Roddy. The farm was the original Roddy farm. The old farmhouse was torn down years earlier, replaced with a modern house, but the barn was original dating back to nannies mother time. So, that is a summary.
