My great great grandmother, whose maiden name was Grace Alice Sherlock, came to public attention in 1891 when she murdered one of her daughters and two stepsons. She was tried at the Winchester Assizes and sent to Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum, where she stayed until she died in 1945.
Her father was William Sherlock, a coastguard, who was born in 1814 in Kirdford, Sussex. His parents' place of abode in the records was given as 'Shear, Surrey'. His father was Joseph Sherlock, who was born in 1791, so far as I know in Betchworth. His occupation was given as 'traveller' or 'travelling salesman' in some of the birth records of his children - Edmund, William, Susannah, Eve, Eleanor, Aaron, Caroline, Martha, Mary and Elizabeth - but he was later an agricultural labourer and died in West Marden, Sussex, in 1869. So far as I know, most of the children were born in different parts of Surrey or the northern part of Sussex.
I'd love to hear from anyone who thinks there may be a connection with their relatives. I suspect that there is a definite connection with Robin Sherlock.
