William Sherrod 1820s Alabama & Louisiana
We are looking for information regarding William Sherrod (b. in Tennessee probably in the late-1700s). He married Mary Brown (b. 1800 in Virginia), probably in Alabama. The Brown family migrated from Virginia (probably out of Cumberland or Bedford county), re-locating in Madison County, Alabama no later than 1815. William Sherrod and his wife Mary Brown Sherrod appear in at least two land documents from Madison County. While in Alabama, William and Mary had at least two sons (James Harvey Sherrod, b. 1819, and George Washington Sherrod, b. 1821). Around the middle of the decade of the 1820s, most of the Brown family migrated to Northwest Louisiana. William and Mary Sherrod were part of that migration. William Sherrod's signature appears as a witness on an 1825 Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana document regarding the marriage of his brother in law Thomas Moore Brown to Mary Wrinkle. By 1830, William appears to be dead. In November of that same year, his widow Mary wed Simon Manning (b. 1810 in Georgia), a noteworthy Northwest Louisiana pioneer who was successful in cotton farming, the sawmill business, and the development of the town of Ringgold, Louisiana. We suspect that William Sherrod's line extends back to John and George Sherrar (who migrated out of the British Isles and are found in Isle of Wight County, Virginia by 1837), but we have yet to uncover solid genealogical evidence that identifies William as part of that Sherrod line. If anyone has any information about William Sherrod and his origins, we would be very interested in sharing information.
