Brenda,
Yes, you are right it is difficult. But, there you have a lead in that Henry Sheppard. That could be a relative of one of the four that landed in Hancock's Bridge, Cumberland County. Or, it could be one of the brothers that had a wonderlust! I could not say, but I did a search on Kate Sheppard and came up with 11 of them during that period you mentioned. It says some were married and some not, but to no avail could I find who they were married to, so it is a mystery? If you know there husbands surname you might try a search of that in the Cumberland Dare-Sheppard database. It may or may not come up with something. Hopefully, you will eventually find all of the info you need. I know years ago one of my Mother's relatives, my Aunt Hazel Coleman Anderson, from Essex Fells, NJ. was trying to find some of the Coleman's from Ireland and she eventually gave up because of just the reasons you mentioned. When you go back to the "old country," things change completely. I know that the Sheppards are still represented in Cork County, and around Cork, Ireland. They are probably distant relatives also.
It makes it a lot harder when you go across an Ocean and try to research, years later.
Please keep in mind, as I was doing my research some years back I did find a name of Benjamin Franklin Sheppard...which was my late father's uncle. I assume it was popular before the civil war and during the later colonial period to make a connection with a famous person.
Hence, the name of George Washington Sheppard may have been very popular at the time.
Bill Sheppard
