Hi, Ken.

The 1900 census enumerating Oscar and "Manda E" Shepherd's family indicates that Amanda was born Feb. 1871 in Illinois. (Source: 1900 United States Federal Census > Kansas > Sumner > Wellington > District 346)

Going back to the 1880 census, a 10-year-old Amanda is enumerated with parents Robert JARVIS (47, born IL) and Nancy J. (38, born KY). (Source: 1880 United States Federal Census > Illinois > Coles > Humbolt > District 50)

The 1885 KS State census enumerates this same Robert & Nancy JARVIS family in Kansas, including "Mandy E."; all children were born in IL except 1-month-old twins Melvin & Elvin, who were born in KS, dating the family's migration from IL to KS to sometime between 1883 and 1885. (Source: 1885 > Sumner > South Haven

Tracking Robert JARVIS (born c1834) back, I first find a likely match for him in the 1850 census with his apparent parents John JARVIS (born Madison KY) and Mary {maiden name unknown} (born Bebford VA). [Source: 1850 United States Federal Census > Illinois > Edgar > Grandview and Embarrass]

In the 1860 census, Robert JARVIS is enumerated with an apparent wife named Mary (born c1838 PA) and 9-month-old daughter Sara E. [Source: 1860 United States Federal Census > Illinois > Edgar > Embarrass]

By 1870, Robert JARVIS is enumerated with Nancy. The two oldest children, Sarah and John are both listed as 11 years old and born in IL. This suggests that Nancy may have been married before and that John is her son by her previous marriage. [Source: 1870 United States Federal Census > Illinois > Coles > Humboldt]

The 1900 census indicates that Robert JARVIS was born Aug 1834 in IL, and both parents born in KY. Nancy J. was born Feb 1847 in KY, both parents born in KY. By 1900 she has born 15 children, only 11 of whom are still living.

The latest I find Robert JARVIS on a census is 1910 United States Federal Census > Oklahoma > Okfuskee > Okemah Ward 2 > District 141; wife Nancy J is also enumerated with him, along wife two daughters, a son-in-law and three grandchildren.

The latest I find John JARVIS on a census is 1880 United States Federal Census > Illinois > Douglas > Arcola > District 82.

Get in touch with me directly if you would like scans of any of these censuses. You have my email address.

Mary
