Shepherd/Shepard in Orange/Granville NC - 1700's

Without a definite name, I know I am shooting in the dark. But I'm hoping to find anything related to a Shepherd/Shepard family from Old Orange or Granville Counties in NC during the 1700's. I have found a William and Nathaniel on a Granville tax list from 1751. They are shown to have been living "on the Dan" river. This area would have become Old Orange, then Caswell Co.

I have reason to believe that this family was also Native American, in part or in full. And that a woman from this family bore 2 illigitimate sons by my 6th great-grandfather.

Does anyone know of this surname found among Native Americans or have any information related to its presence in Old Orange, Old Granville, Caswell or Person Counties of NC?
