Shepards of Kent County, Michigan 1800s

Looking for any information on James Shepard's parents. Here is his info:

b. ~1822 New York
moved to Michigan sometime before 1844.
Feb. 25, 1844 - Married to Orpha McKay, Lowell, Kent County, MI.
Dec. 16, 1844 - birth of son Casey, Kalamazoo, MI.
~1846 - Birth of son Albert
~1848 - Birth of daughter Orvilla
~1855 - Birth of son Hiram
~1864 - Birth of son James Frank
1845-1870 - Lived in Ada, Kent County, MI
1880-April 28, 1899 - Lived in Lowell, Kent County, MI
April 28, 1899 - Died.

I *think* his father's name is Henry Shepard, born in New York and he has a brother, Henry H. (b. ~1826, New York) who married a woman named Catherine and they had three children, Harriet, Alonzo & Carrie Bella. They moved from New York to Michigan a little later than James, sometime between 1851-1854.

I'm looking for any info anyone has on James' parents. Is it Henry? What was his wife's name?

Also, the Smith family, one of the original settlers of Ada, MI in Kent County, is also connected to the Shepards somehow. (Sidney Smith, first postmaster of the settlement, had a daughter Ada, for whom the settlement was named in 1837.) If anyone knows how the Shepards and Smiths are connected, I'd appreciate that, too. My mother-in-law (maiden name Shepard) has some of Amelia Smith's furniture from the 1800s/early 1900s.
