About this statement: "John who was born 1650 (married to Jane) who bought 1800 acres at Carotoman and later built Rural Plains", in her book entitled A HISTORY OF THE SHELTON FAMILY OF ENGLAND AND AMERICA the following is found on page 83: "The John Shelton who bought "Carotoman" in Lancaster Co. Va., "Currioman" in Westmoreland Co. Va., and built "Rural Plains" in Hanover Co. Va. was a son of James Shelton of York Co Va. who was son of Thomas Shelton son of the first James Shelton, Gentleman of Va. and Bermuda."

I never saw so many falsehoods in one sentence. The man who purchased Currioman was John Chilton. John is believed to have come to Viginia in 1666 to secure an estate in Lancaster County left him by his brother, George. He lived in Lancaster on 12-8-1703 when he sold his plantation in Christ Church Parish to Robert Carter, Esq., and removed to Westmoreland County, VA, where he made his will on Nov. 15, 1706, naming wife Jone (Jane is name as usually rendered) and Children. This is Mrs. Whitaker's John Shelton of Currioman Bay and is her ancestor. She so obviously wanted to be connected with Rural Plains and she was not even a Shelton; she was a Chilton. Obviously this man did not build Rural Plains since the Park Service dated the basement construction in 1723 and John Chilton of Currioman died in 1706. Whitaker stated on page 85 of her book "The records give him as 'John Chilton' but the name was always pronounced as 'Shelton' ". As stated Whitaker was descended from this family as her grandfather spelled and pronounced his surname as "Shelton" apparently but, based on the genealogy she claimed for him, he was a Chilton out of the Currioman line.

As already stated, her "first James Shelton" is easily proven to have been a "Skelton" and not a Shelton. The Thomas Shelton to whom she refers in that sentence is proven to have been Thomas Chilton.

Mrs. Whitaker, apparently in an effort to put herself on the Rural Plains Shelton line and, in my opinion in order to claim relationship with Patrick Henry, wrote her book claiming that anyone with the surname of "Skelton", "Chilton", "Chelton" amd "Sheldon" were actually "Shelton" who did not know how to spell properly the surname. Unfortunately for her theory, modern genealogy DNA testing has proven her wrong as there exists a DNA database for Shelton, Chilton & Skelton which has tests from the lines discussed in her book and these tests do not match, thereby presenting proof which cannot be disputed.

Unfortunately, Mrs. Whitaker's book which more or less is an entire falsehood apparently just cannot be killed.
