There are those who will strongly argue that the line before James of York County, VA and Thomas of Lower Norfolk County, VA are not correct. I do believe there was a James at Jamestown for a short time, but how he may have been related to the Ralph Shelton line I do not know. To my knowledge, no one has suggested an alternative tie to English Sheltons. In a pedigree chart I received from a Charles Shelton of Concord, CA a long time ago, he has John who was born 1650 (married to Jane) who bought 1800 acres at Carotoman and later built Rural Plains. The Shelton family used to claim the house was built in the mid to late 1600s, but historians now say it dates to the early 1700s. This John was the father of John born about 1666 (father at age 16?). This Captain John apparently married 1st Lettis(a) Ball and 2nd Mary Watts. He died in 1726. It may have been this John who built Rural Plains. He fathered another John who married an Ann. I know all the Johns are confusing. My mother (a Shelton by birth) once told me that in her family "every Tom, Dick, and Harry was named John." She had a grandfather named John, an uncle named John, and a brother named John. So there you have it for what it's worth.
