Does any one have any information on the following family?
I am looking for the parents of Susan Ann Shelton and Matilda J. Shelton who died in Wythe County,VA.
Susan Ann married in Rockingham N.C.,Alfred Clemons (my line). Her second husband reported at her death that she was the daughter of ______Shelton and _______Sands.I however,do not believe her mother was a Sands. I believe her to be a Hall. I found a Nathaniel Shelton and Mary Hall who married in Rockingham County,N.C.
In the 1850 N.C. census I found: Nathaniel Shelton,age 38;Polly,age 45;Matilda,age 17;William,age 14;Susan,age 12;
John,age 11;Madison,age 9;James H., age 4.There were no Sheltons in Wythe County at this time with these children.
In the 1860 Wythe County,VA. census (after Matilda and Susan had married)a Nathaniel,age 42,born VA.; Polly,age 48,born N.C.; Madison,age 16,born N.C.;James,age 14,born N.C.
In the 1870 Wythe County census I find Nathaniel,age 57,born N.C.; Mary,age 60,born N.C.; Matilda,age 40,(even though given as a Shelton,I believe her to be the husband of my descendant because I can not find him in 1870). Also in the home is William,age 38;Mahala,age 37; Gearge,age 10; Frances,age 8; Mary,age 5.
Can not find Nathaniel or Mary in later census.Notice the age differance for them through the years.However,Matilda and Susan's age fit in perfect with my line who share the same name.
