Linda, Thank you so much for this information. I will reply in detail when I have digested it a bit. I just got the Spring/Summer issue of the Susquehanna County Historical Society periodical today. It has a listing of all the Revolutionary War Vets who died in the county. Johnan Christian Shelp (married to Jane Freeman) is listed in that roster, but called "Christian Shelp". I had believed (and still do) that he was a militiaman on the Loyalist side, i.e., the Royal New York Regiment. Since a lot of Hessian soldiers did not return to Germany, but homesteaded in Susquehanna County, I thought that might have been a motivation for him to come down there from New York. Also a change of scenery might have been good for his health, so to speak...
Incidentally, there are two "Jessups" in NE Pennsylvania - in two different counties - but named after the same early judge. I have always presumed that the Shelps were all associated with Jessup (Susquehanna County)and not the one in Lackawanna Co.
