The name is Shellman...
Some one in the Shellman Family, please help me!Way back yonder (1938) my momma hung the name Shellman on me to honor my gr-grandfather and hoped to get something in his will, but it didn't work. But for the rest of my life, I've had to try to explain where it came from and i ani't got a clue. It first shows up when Mathew Durham (his wife was Fannie Spencer) hangs it on one of his kids, ShelmanDurham b. June 6, 1803 in Hancock Co, GA.That Shelman was spelled with one L, while later another one got it with two L's, then me with two L's.In all of our family, only three of us have carried this name forward. It has no other family significance.Back then, the practice of naming a son after the mother's family name was widely practiced.Does anyone know of a connection with the Spencer Family? Any clues or help or even comments would be gratefully appreciated.
