I'm not a SHELL researcher but found the following in the mortality schedule of 1850 for Iowa, Polk County:

GEORGE SHELL, age 32, b. Kentucky, widower, died Oct 1850 of winter fever, occupation farmer.

RUTH J. SHELL, age 21, b. Tennessee, married, died August 1850 of child birth.
