I have now been in correspondence with descendants of Martha E. Sheldon. They have notes that say that Martha's mother died when she was 3 years old and that she moved to Wisconsin in 1848. In 1848, our other George and Sarah Sheldon were in Ogdensburg, NY where their second son was born. They were in Ottawa for the 1851 census and all succeeding children. One of those children matches the John mentioned in Henry Sheldon's obituary, living in Omaha, Nebraska. The John I find in an Omaha census was born in Canada.

By the way, I already knew that Arthur and Henry had married sisters Phoebe and Susan Parmenter. It took a recently discovered obituary to link them as siblings with Martha, listed as Mrs. H. S. Miller.

I suspect that after the death of Sarah Avery Sheldon, George left the 3 children with relatives and married Sarah born in Ireland. Arthur apparently followed his father's pattern when his wife died. His wife Lydia Makee Sheldon died following the birth of their third son and that son was adopted while the older two are found in census data with their maternal grandparents.

We'll see if we can find out the name of the aunt with whom Martha was living and if Arthur and Henry were there, too. I have been unable to find any of them in 1850 census data. Arthur's two boys were erroneously listed as Makee rather than Sheldon in one census. This might be the case here, too.
