Hi

My name is Michael David Sheldon born in Long Eaton, Nottingham UK and I have been doing research into my own family tree for about 18 months. Although I have a lot of info about my family I know that I still have a lot more discoveries to make.

One which is interesting is that my Great, Great, Great Uncle Thomas Sheldon joined the Royal Horse Artillery in 1811 at Boston, Lincs and was a Driver & Gunner. In 1815 he took part in the Battle of Waterloo and survived and was eventually discharged in 1840 with an ‘exemplary’ record this info is held at the National Archives at Kew, London. He worked as a driver for the Director general of the Royal Ordnance Hospital at Woolwich, Kent and is shown in the 1841 Census with is wife Elizabeth. Eventually he moved back to Arnold, Nottingham and was shown in the 1861 Census records as a Chelsea Pensioner.

I have reason to believe his son Thomas Sheldon also joined the Royal Horse Artillery and may have been involved in the Crimean War, he also was discharged from the Royal Ordnance Hospital at Woolwich, Kent. I have requested his discharge papers which are also held at the National Archives at Kew, London.

Another of his sons Robert Sheldon joined the Royal Sappers & Miners (the fledgling Royal Engineers) and is listed in the 1851 Census as a Bugler. His trail goes cold but suspect he went to the Crimean War as well, further research is needed.

If anyone here thinks they are related please get in touch.
