In this age of computer records, I taught myself a trick. I enter only the first name and not the last name. Sometimes it works. With my wife at the computer, I asked her to enter New York 1850 for an Amanda age 2. She came up almost immediately with Richard and Emily Scott, each born England, in Kings County Bushwick with a dau named Amanda. He appears as a contractor. In the 1860 Ward 14 Williamsburg P O, he is a baker; Amanda is 14 at home. In the 1870, Richard is widower, brickmason. Amanda is not at home. There are several surnames in the dwelling which leads me to conjecture: Could Charles H. have been a boarder in that home? Could Charles and Amanda have met that way? If you will tell me your physical location (i. e.: city, county), I may be able to suggest some chase sites for you to visit. Did you know, for example that there were STATE Censuses in years between FEDERAL Censuses? I would suggest the NYC Public Library if you are in New Jersey!
