Michael,
I believe the "execution" you are referring to is the one called the Palmyra Massacre. However there were two other "executions" that same year, one at Kirksville and one at Macon City. Either of these three could be the one you are referencing. The details are a little off but history has a habit of getting fuzzy with time.
