Jonathan died in Richland County, Illinois, and was buried in the Macedonia Cemetery there. That county came into existence in 1841. The Richland County Clerk only has death records to 1878. Nevertheless, that clerk may be able to provide the name of an historical and/or genealogical society for that county. Such archives often have old newspaper accounts of events such as you describe and may also be assistive in other manners.

The Richland County Clerk may be reached at:

103 W. Main St., Olney, Illinois 62450 (618-392-3111)

Olney is known for a population of albino squirrels. I am not a native of this community or relate4d to Garrison Shelby. Hope this message is of some value to you.
