Evan Shelby

I have been giving a series of presentations on the historically significant Shelbys and have been doing a lot of research and reading a lot of books and articles about them. In reviewing this message board, I see that many of you have run into the same problem that I have had. So and so Shelby lists their place of birth as Virginia (or elsewhere) but their family was not there at that time.

It suddenly occured to me one day that several of the southern states were carved out of Va around 1800, such as Tenna, Ky, and WVa. for example. Therefore, depending upon the thinking of the person, they could have been born, married etc. in VA and it later became KY. They could list either and be correct. Hope that helps someone.

Now, I have a question. One of the books that I read claimed that most, if not all, of the Shelbys in the USA descended from Evan Shelby who came here in about 1743 from Wales. In comparing notes with other Shelbys, it seems inevitable that they have Evan, Evan 11 (the Rev War General) Evan 111 or Isaac in their ancestry. Is there any merit to that statement that we are all descended from Evan? If not, do any of you have another Shelby in lieu of Evan?
