This is copied from a scanned document sent to me by Greg Shelby. This clears up some of the questions. The data which follows In regards to James H. Emerson were obtained from the claims for pension and bounty land on file under w.O. 30552, based upon his service in the War of 1812. The name of this officer is shown at Hervey Emerson on one military document. He stated that his name was James Harry (or Harvey) Emerson and that he was usually designated and known by his middle name. His middle name was not written plainly by the clerk, so it cannot be determined whether it was Harry or Harvey in this case. James H. Emerson volunteered in Maury County, Tennessee, and served from December 10, 1812 until April 20, 1813, at 2* sergeant in Captain Benjamin Reynolds' company of Tennessee militia, on the tour to the Natchez Country. He entered service November 13, 1814, at 2" Lieutenant of Captain Bird S. Hurt's company of Tennessee militia and continued to serve until May 13, 1815, when he was discharged at Nashville, Tennessee; during this service, he was in the battle of New 0rleans. He applied February 8, 1851, for the bounty land which was due under the Act of September 28, 1850 on account of his service in the War of 1812. He was then aged fifty-eight years, and resided in Maury County, Tennessee. He was allowed 160 acres of bounty land on warrant #10441. James H. Emerson moved in 1852, from Tennessee to Kentucky. He was allowed pension on account of his service in the War of 1812,on his application executed April 20, 1871, at which time he resided in Graves County, Kentucky, his post office, Mayfield. This officer died June 16, 1873 in said Graves County. James H. Emerson married July 18, 1852, in Graves County, Kentucky, Dolly Shelby, whose name was formerly Dolly Bowdens they were married by H. A. Bowden, D,D. of Graves County, Kentucky, whose relationship to said Dolly was not stated. The ceremony took place at the home of A. Shelby. Dolly Emerson made the following statement in 1878, which is not very clear, but quoted, as follows: that her first name was Dolly Bowden she married Reece Shelby. :• Her husband married to Elizabeth Thomas 1813". & she died A She died in 1843 then married to Susan Gilbreth 1844 And She died 1850 in Tenn Dolly Emerson, the officer's widow, was allowed pension on her application executed July 25, 1878, at which time she resided in Graves County, Kentucky, her post office Lynville.
