Dear Judith:
What a gift this has been to me. Alfred B Shelby is MY FATHER. This is one letter among two that I was talking about when I first joined the forum. My mother gave thse letters to my father's brother along with a Bowie Knife that one of our family members carried on the Lewis & Clark Expedition. There were no Shelby's listed in the roster of the expedition, but there was a Gibson and I think I can tie this person to John Lafayette Shelby's wife, Ann J Hinckley Shelby's father Robert Gibson Hinckley and thus probably the source of the knife.
I am so very, very grateful that you have taken your valuable time to assist me in my search. When I saw this information, I can't tell you the emotions that ran through me.
