From Cass Knight Shelby's collection in the Filson Club [now Filson historical society] Library:

Letters, Evan K. Shelby, LaMesa, California, to Cass [These are typed abstracts by Cass, and not the original letters]:
{data in brackets [] were made by Cass}

May 9, 1949
"My father's cousin, Alfred B. Shelby of San Francisco, Calif., has a letter written to my great-grandfather, John Lafayette Shelby, by his father, Alfred M. Shelby of Ballard County, Kentucky, dated February 16, 1856. In this letter is mentioned brothers, Alfred, Washington, Evan (who d. Apr 8, 1855), Napoleon and Mortimer, and sisters, Louisa, Elvira, Amelia and Betty [i.e. John L's brothers and sisters].
John L. had as sons, John, Evan K and Isaac. John had sons, John, Jr., and Alfred B. (above). Evan K, my grandfather, had Thomas, Lee (my father), Evalynne and Evan (d. infancy).
John L. was born in Hardman County, Tennessee, about 1823, but was taken by his parents to Kentucky, settling near Paducah. His mother was Elvira Reed, or Reid.
The "K" in my name stands for Kenneth. I was given this name merely to have the same initials as my grandfather, whose K was an initial only. Note the liking this family has for naming sons after famous men. Even my father Lee was named for Gen. Robert E. Lee. My grandfather was born in California about 1855, my father in 1888, and I in 1912."

Jul 2, 1950 Evan K. to Cass:
"I am enclosing a letter [undated] from my Aunt Evalynne (Shelby) Paddon of Altedena, Calif., the daughter of Evan K Shelby and granddaughter of John L, Shelby, giving the following information:
Grandpa was born in Hardman County, Tennessee. His father went there when the United States took over that portion. They then went back to Kentucky and settled near Paducah, the farm station on the railroad being Bandana [in Ballard Co]. His mother's name was Elviry Reed or Reid, born in Virginia, and his brothers and sisters were Napoleon, Washington, Mortimer, Isaac, Aurelia, Elviry and Alfred, possibly more, but I do not remember. grandpa came to California in 1850-52.
The farm, four miles or so from Paducah, had 640 acres in the Ohio River bottom. Grandpa told me it was situated at the bend of the Ohio River where it swings south. He did not like farming, or the easy life there, so he left for California. Like all babies born in slavery times, he had been given a twelve year old boy to look after him, whose name was Dick.
Wehn Granpa's caravan got as far at St Louis, Dick crawled out from under the wagon, where he had hidden, so as to be with Grandpa, who had to wait over in order to send Dick back home, He saw old Dick when he went back to Kentucky after the Civil War.
Alfred did not marry until after the death of the two old maid sisters and then got the whole place. He married late in life and had a family, from whom is descended From Alfred Shelby, a brain specialist in New York City.
In your letter you mention three children, John, Evan and Isaac. If you mean Grandpa's family, he also had Jennie, Ida and another. He lost three or four little children, who are buried at Soquel. Grandpa was born in 1823, I think."

Sep 28, 1951 - Evan K to Cass:
"Just to complete my line, I would advise:
V. John Lafayette Shelby (abt 182301910); mar. Anne Jeannette Hinckley; to Santa Cruz, Calif., abt 1852. His son,
VI. Evan K Shelby (1860-19-03); mar. Sarah J. Walker. Their son,
VII. Lee Walker Shelby (1888-1916); mar. Anna H Kilfoy. Their son,
VIII. Evan Kenneth Shelby (1912- ), b. in California; mar. Madelyn J. Pulliam of Louisville, KY"

Note, A. E. Buchanan, clerk of Ballard County, Kentucky, at Wickliffe.
Written on my [Cass] inquiry of Aug 12, 1950, -
"We have some Shelbys living in Ballard County, but not in this section. They all live in Kevil community. Some are Frank, Vira, Clyde, Howard, Terry and R. F. We have the will of Alfred M Shelby, recorded June, 16, 1916."

Letter, Estella (Shelby) Morrison, Bandana, Kentucky, to Cass:
Sep 18, 1950, -
"Your letter of inquiry to Frank Shelby has been turned over to me, a granddaughter of Alfred Moore Shelby. I am the daughter of Alfred Moore Shelby, Jr. The following information is taken from an early edition of a Kentucky history:
Alfred M. Shelby was born in 1799 in Montgomery County, Tennessee. he was a finely educated teacher and died in 1880. He was the son of John, [Jr], a native of East Tennessee and a cousin of Gov. Isaac Shelby; was ten years a legislator and died in 1818, aged 48[51?] years. John's father was John Shelby of Maryland. alfred M married Alvira Reed of Livingston County, Kentucky.
There were eleven children born to them. Alfred M is buried between LaCenter and Kevil on part of his old home place and most of his children lie there too.
As you know, the first Shelby came from Wales and settled in [near] Hagerstown, Md. If you would like more information on the early ancetors, write to Otis M Shelby at Marion, Ky, whose sister is compiling data on the family. TheFrank Shelby to whom you wrote is a great-grandson of Alfred M. As far as I know, there are four of Alfred M's grandchildren living."

There was nothing else from the above correspondents.

Also, see messages # 408 and 413, on this board.
