Hello Peggy, Well... I have found all of your information most interesting and I was pouring over some of my file today to see if I had anything else on any other Cockburn groups. I turned up some interesting info. So my ancestor John McFarland (B. 10-25-1748 D. 10-11-1839 ) who was the son of John McFarland and Rachel Shelby married on 12-2-1772 to Susannah Cox (B. 10-7-1755 D. 8-17-1824). Susannah was the daughter of Ezekiel Cox/Cock (B. 1722 D. 10-16-1776)and Sarah Rose (B. 6-15-1734 D. aft 1796). I say that this is interesting because Ezekiel was said to have a sister named Sarah Cox/Cock who married a Mr. Cockburn but I have no first name. I have seen that Sarah was born in Clear Springs, Washington Co., MD. Ezekiel and Sarah had a sister named Letitia (B. 1-12-1725 to 1727 D. 9-6-1777)who married Evan Shelby II (B. bef 10-23-1719 D. 12-4-1794). Here is a bit of info on David Cock/Cox who was the father of Ezekiel, Letitia and Sarah found at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~lzrslong/b1123.htm (1) Tradition states that he came with his brother John from Scotland in the early 1700's to settled in VA and married when he was 24. After his marriage he brought his wife to his new home on the Potomac River, at the junction of Licking Creek. (1) A farmer. Lived on 103 acres called "Lubberland" which lay on the north branch of the Potomac River at the mouth of Licking Creek, between Ernstville and Parkhead Stations of the Western MD RR in what is now Indian Springs District (15) of Washington Co., MD. (Washington Co. formed 1776 from Frederick Co., formed 1748 from Prince George's Co., MD.) The Cox place was about 9 miles from "Maiden's Choice," where the Shelbys lived, and 3-4 miles northwest from the great stone Fort Frederick, erected during the French and Indian Wars. (1c) 1765, 10 Apr: David Cox wrote a will, probated 28 Mar 1771. Names wife Susannah, children Ezekiel, Letitia Shelby, Sarah Cockburn, Joseph and Mary Warford.[alice-boyd.FTW] So we have some more Cockburn tie in there... Also I have seen that a Coburn/Cockburn group in North Carolina married into some of the North Carolina Shelby group that descended from Evan's son Rees who married Mary Blair. That Carolina connection is as follows: William Shelby Polk (B. abt 1786 D. 7-25-1839) son of Thomas Polk (B. 2-28-1756 D.? ) and Mary Shelby (B. 2-18-1768 D. abt 1841). Mary Shelby was the daugther of Rees Shelby and Mary Blair. Wiliam Shelby Polk married to Winifred Coburn (B. abt 1793 D.? ). She was the daugther of Headley Coburn (B. abt 1772 D.?) Headley was the son of Francis Coburn (B. abt 1740 D.? ) and Lydia Ross (B. abt 1740 D.?) Francis was the son of George Cockburn (B. abt 1720 D.?) Now I don't profess to know much about any of the Cockburn's but it is interesting that they appear to be a bit interwoven into the Shelby family in various ways. These two Cockburn groups may be unrelated as I am not familiar with them. From what I have seen online the one's in North Carolina were mainly from the Chowan, Martin, Anson and Halifax Co., NC areas. William Shelby Polk was listed as passing away in Hardeman Co., TN. I actually grew up about 25 minutes from Martinsburg, Berkely Co., WV. I think it may be productive. I can try and give a call to see what kind of stuff the county has on file from this timeframe. I don't get up that way too often, usually on weekends when I do go so everything is closed. I will try to see about getting up there some time in the future. I have a little one and work that keeps my research time relatively limited. I will say that I am not a professional researcher as this has been more of a hobby for the last five years but I am pretty good about digging stuff up. I have been to the courthouses of the Eastern Shore of Virginia several times for Will research. I will try and do that for us on this Cockburn stuff but can't give any solid timeframe guarantees which saddens me because it would be lovely for both of us as I think this is an important link for us in possibly beginning to write an yet unknown chapter of the life of Rachel Shelby. I would be very interested to see the documents that you speak of in your posession. I was wondering if you might be able to give me a ballpark cost on the copying and mailing of the info as I want to make sure I know roughly what to expect. Funny that you mention the "Old Dutch Burial Ground". My wife and I usually attend a Fall Festival in October called the Apple Butter Festival. It is held in Berkeley Springs, WV. I have often noticed an old cemetery and this conversation brought it to memory. I took a look on the internet and found this website for a group that does a walking tour which includes this site. Sure enough one of the names for this cemetery was the Dutch Cemetery. Now I don't know if this is the same one that Robert Cockburn is speaking of. It is in Morgan County just north of Berkeley. The site for this is http://www.berkeleysprings.com/walkingtour/1dutchcemetery.html Ok.... Well, that probably enough information to overload you with for now.
