Devello Z. Sheffield was born in this town, in 1840. He obtained a good academic education at Warsaw, NY and taught school winters until 1861, when he enlisted in the 17th NY infantry. After the civil war he was principal of Castile Union School. He subsequently attended the Auburn Theological Seminary, and upon his graduation he married Miss Ella Sherril, of Pike, NY, and went as a missionary to China, where he has resided the past ten years.
