Hello,
Thanks for your comments. They were really interesting.I wish that I could be of more help.
Phillip Sheffer of Ashland, Ashland County, OH lived near to, and seemed to deal with, a Jacob Sheffer in Ashland, OH.In the Jacob Sheffer papers in one of the local Ashland historical Societies, there is a baptismal certificate for him which translated to read that this Jacob Shefer was born 6 Nov 1761 in Upper Milford township, Northampton County, PA and was the son of Jacob Shefer and Elizabeth Blitzenberger. We do not know if our Phillip and this Jacob (b. 1761) were related, but they are the only two in the town of Ashland.
There is another Phillip Sheffer, who came out of a branch of a family who went down to Maryland.Descendants of that Phillip Sheffer (with a different named wife and children) claim that he is the same Phillip Sheffer who was in Ashland, Ohio, but this is in error. Our Phillip Sheffer's wife's name is Margaret Vance (Wentz) and she is buried there in Ashland, OH.
I am not sure about the origin of the claim that Phillip Sheffer of Ashland, Ohio being the son of a Phillip Sheffer b. 1729 of Northampton County, PA.It may have been copied from some 'hearsay' published in a genealogy somewhere.I have never seen any evidence yet to prove that Phillip Sheffer of Ashland, Ohio was the son of a Phillip , b. 1729 in Northampton Co., PA.
I currently reside in Singapore, on a 3 year church assignment, and all of my genealogy research on the Sheffer family is at home in the USA.I have some information entered into my computer genealogy database, but it is not totally complete.
I went online and saw that the ship that arrived on 2 Nov 1744 in Philadelphia was the "Friendship" and Phillip Shaffer and Henry Scheffer are both listed on that ship list. The ship Carterel is right next to the Friendship, so perhaps your listing them as being on the Carterel was a typo. However, Phillip and Jacob are not listed next to each other, on the list, and most of the families appear to be grouped together. So I'm not entirely convinced that they are related.Schaeffer and its numerous variant spellings, seem to be a fairly common German surname.
If you have any other information on Henry and Phillip Sheffer of Lehigh township, Northampton Co., PA, I'd certainly be eager to read it.
Thank you for your reply.Maybe we will be able to figure out something that can be helpful in our genealogy research efforts.
