Thanks for all your suggestions, so far, especially Ralph.
I have since discoverd the following additional facts:
My great-grandmother, Nellie M. Sheehan, is believed to have been born in Lacka, County Limerick, Ireland, on 27 April 1876 to John and Mary [Fitzgerald] Sheehan. We still don't know if her given name was Ellen or Helen, but in addition to "Nellie" she is listed as both Mary (1930) and May (1910) on U.S. census documents.
She came to the US around 1888, to Chicago, (possibly accompanied by a 9 y/o brother William, or he may have been an adult) and stayed with her sister Mary (middle initial C. or O. or J.) [Sheehan] and brother-in-law, John J. Shields, and their young son "Willie" (William John Sheehan Shields according to HIS WWI draft registration, but then he disappears from the records.) They lived in the 35th Ward on Harvard St. (possibly now Arthington St., not the Harvard Ave. running through Chicago's South Side today). The 1900 census does not show the brother Willie, just Nellie's nephew, so I have to assume one of two things: 1)"Willie" was not "9" but rather "a" (for adult ???) on the ship registry (it's very hard to distinguish) and already went off on his own; or 2) since there is reason to believe Nellie and Willie were detained upon arrival ('88 in NY, but not "admitted" until '89), there may have been an illness from which he did not recover.
"Nellie" reportedly worked as a domestic for the Hartigan family in Chicago (ancestors of former IL Lt. Gov. Neil Hartigan) and she played piano, giving lessons later in her life. She married James Henry Devereaux (aka "Big Six") on 9 Oct 1901, not sure at which Catholic church though. By 1910 they lived in a flat on W. 28th St with their first child, John James Thornton Devereaux. Her husband was a teamster driver for the R.R. Donnelly Press. My grandmother, Mary Laverne Deveraux was born to them in 1910. In 1920 were in the same flat, working same jobs. 1930 saw them at 29th and Emerald; Nellie died on 15 Sep 1933.
So I am still trying to learn her correct given name and absplute natal heritage. Also I would appreciate any further information abotu her siblings (listed above or otherwise) so as to track them further. WIlliam J. S. SHields seems to have married Sallie Caldwell in 1917. No info after that.
If ANY of this sounds familiar, please get in touch with me.

Thanks,
Kate
