Shedd/Courtney Shelby Co. 1870 Texas
I need information / conformation about my Great- Grandparents.I will explain what I have found or suspect, and any additional information your Historical Society can provide will be appreciated. The family names involved are Shedd (or Shed), Courtney, Sessums, Nail, and Sanders.
I have traced my mother’s side of the family (Courtney) back to 1640 England.I had heard that my mother and father were also distant cousins.I looked for Shedds in the same county as the Courtney’s.
My great-great grandfather (great-great-great grandfather on my mother’s side), Jesse Courtney, married Charity Sessums, probably in Mississippi, and moved to Texas.Jesse died between 1846 and 1850.Charity Courtney is listed in the 1850 Panola County census on the same page as the Sessums and Nail families.Listed among her children is Lishoby, born in 1840, who I think is my great-grandmother.Charity remarried a William Nail and is listed in the 1860 Shelby County census on page 75. The Shedd/Shed family, which I believe are my ancestors from Georgia, is listed on page 74.
My grandfather, John W. Shedd, was probably born in Shelby or Smith County.According to the 1900 Rains County census, he was born in December 1872. His father was from Georgia. The James Shedd family is listed in the 1850 Carroll County Georgia census, and moved to Shelby County, Texas between 1850 and 1860.Daughter Mary Ann Shedd married Harvey Sanders and is listed on page 74 between William and John Shedd, the two oldest sons of James Shedd.
Mary Shedd and Harvey Sanders had a child, Henry, listed as being 8 months old.Harvey Sanders was a blacksmith and is found again in the 1870 Johnson County census. But Henry, who would be 10 years old, is not listed. However, the 1870 Shelby County census has a Henry who is 10 years old, listed with an Aron D. and Lishaby Shedd.Aron is only 21, so he would have had to be a father at age 11. Lishaby, age 30, would have to have been married before. What I suspect is that Aron is really James, who was about 12 in the 1860 Census, and this is his nephew, the son of Mary and Harvey Sanders. They already had two older sons, James and Andrew.Being a blacksmith (and not needing the labor or extra mouth to feed), Henry probably stayed with his uncle to work on the farm.Lishaby (?) is probably Lishoby Courtney and would support the report of my parents being distant cousins.
I would like to find some record of this marriage.
In the 1880 Smith County census a Sam’l, or Daniel (depending on the database) and Lishaby, are listed with a son J.W. (age 7) and a H. W. Watson(?) who I believe is Henry Sanders.Although none of the ages match exactly with the other census mentioned above, the age difference of nine years does. The other connection is Charity (Sessums, Courtney) Nail.Lishaby’s mother is listed on the next line.I believe the son J.W., is my grandfather.
My grandfather, John W. Shed, was married on March 3, 1892 to Emma D. Coleman in Rains County, Texas.A Jany Shed married J. B. Hurley on March 31, 1892 in Rains County. In the 1900 Henderson County census, Jany and J.B. are listed just before a Daniel Shed.
I need to find out if Lishaby’s husband is James (Daniel?) Shedd listed in the 1860 Shelby Co. Census.
