Hello, The Hampstead Sheaves, from the 1870 Coahoma County, MS census is my great-great-great-great grandfather. His given name was actually Armstead not Hampstead. If feel confident of this mistake because I have the will of the slaveowner (George Boyd Hopson) who willed Armstead and his family to his wife when he died in 1847 in Montgomery County, TN. In George's will he named Armstead, his wife Nancy and their children; Sucky, Juddah, Betsey, Kidiziah, Martha, Dennis, and Mary. The slaveowner's wife then sold Armstead and his family to her son, Joseph J. Hopson, who owned the Hopson Plantation in Coahoma County,MS. If you look further on the pages after Armstead(Hampstead) and Nancy, you will see a Jacob Shavis with a daughter named Nancy and a son named Armstead. You will also see a Dennis Shavis next to Jacob with a family of his owned. My great-great-great grandmother was the Sucky, that I mentioned above. She later went by Susan. I think that Jacob is the Juddah that I mentioned above. I think these were African names that they changed after they were free. Sucky's last name is price and she is on page 63 with a son named Dennis in 1870. Her son, Horace(my great-great grandfather) and Horace's brother Willis live with their father, Joseph Levell in 1870 also on page 63. I find Sucky in 1880 with the name Susan Hopson with Horace ?Willis and Dennis all in her households with the children's ages being exactly 10 years older than in 1870. Horace later named his first daughter,Susan and his first son, Joseph. This all leads me to believe that I am correct that this is my line. What kind of name is Sheaves? Is it African? I can't find any slaveowners with the same last name. With the seemingly African names that Armstead and Nancy gave their children, I suspect that Armstead's parents may have been directly from Africa. Lee Snyder
