Historical Collections of Harrison County Ohio, by Hanna, is a book I own.Author was fond of listing biographies, weddings, burials, and liberally used phrase:children among others born were...Often he added names and then said "probably related to" with no clear source other than they shared a surname and lived in area at same time!I'd like to toss the book out a window for raising as many new questions as it answers...
Some of the text is suspect since it does not match census records. My primary line is WELLING.It goes from John & Mima to David & Margaret to David & Sarah, etc...David Jr is not named since the book states David & Margaret had 6 children, period. Then he remarried to a Nancy Black and had 7 named children.Except the census shows her as Mary and additional weddings show David Welling married a Mary Black in 1845...As for David Jr, he married Jane Sharp in 1834, no children listed, Jane died in 1844...The author never tied David Welling Jr to his parents David Sr and Margaret. Thus the book info on SHARP is equally suspect since it lists Jane marrying a David Welling, but it again fails to identify him as a son of David Sr...Other Sharp names are treated same as Welling:"thought to be related" with no concise info how...No James C Sharp is listed but several earlier generations don't show further info. The CARNAHAN lineage had same fate...One entry has a Samuel Carnahan Sr leaving a will in 1851 naming wife Elizabeth and a daugher Nancy. If Nancy was married it gives no clue, only that later census names in OH and MO both did match those women...
The author must be forgiven for not knowing David Welling Jr moved to Richland Co OH and remarried in 1854.He'd end up in Michigan. His first family was tragic! After Jane died the oldest 2 kids were sent to Belmont County to live with an aunt, Rachel Sharp Harrah.David Jr and their youngest son George vanished until 1860.To confuse the Welling matter more:old David Sr would also have a son George by his 2nd wife Mary/Nancy but he was younger than his nephew George who was in Civil War...I know Michigan Wellings made contact with David Sr's son George because my cousin found the ancient bible and a few photos! Her family was going to toss it, a sad event in so many of my lines.Yet the bible clearly showed 1834 marriage to Jane Sharp, the 3 children, her 1844 death, and finally David Jr's remarriage to Sarah Kinsell...One photo was of "Aunt Laura Welling" with her dau Jessie. That did not match the one line who stayed in Richland Co, it did match the olderHarrison Co line of David Sr's second family.I understand now family lore of my GGgrandma Louisa Welling Wheeler's fond memories of visiting "back east" meant not her older half brother George's family but her uncle George who married an Emma Laura Kirkpatrick. While the "Aunt Laura" is not in the old Harrison Co book her Kirkpatrick line is listed.Took me a few years to splice the loose ends that fit and fill in some of the many gaps.It would be great to round up the Sharp lines, although I'm not related to them...
