Monroe Co, IN Mystery--Sharp/Smart Relationship
Hello
I hope someone may be able to help me clear up my mystery.
I have been researching the Smart Family of Halifax County, Virginia some of which migrated to Monroe County, Indiana. My mystery involves Polly Smart.
Polly was probably the daughter of Willima Smart and Elizabeth Parrott/Parrett and the sister of Susan/Susannah (Smart) Clay wife of Thomas Clay Jr.I discovered Polly's headstone this fall when I went to take a photograph of Susan and Thomas Clay's headstone. She was laid to rest next to Susan and her headstone read "Polly Smart daughter of Wm & E. Smart". Death date may have been below grass line because it appeared to have been reset at some point in time.
Knowing that Polly was a diminutive of Mary and knowing that in Elizabeth Smart's will made in 1825,Mary was mentioned.I went on the assumption they were one in the same person.
When I sent this information along to another Smart Researcher I was told that Mary died in October 1867 in Drapers Valley, McMinn Co, Tennessee. That I had apparently stumbled on to another daughter.
In the 1860 US Census, Indiana, Monroe County, Bean Blossom, Township, June 9, 1860.Polly was shown in the household of Hubbard Sharp age 55 b. Kentucky.Wife: Mary age 55 b. Kentucky and three sons, Samuel Sharp age 19, Daniel Sharp age 16, and John Sharp all born in Indiana.Polly's age was given as 72 and born in Virginia. She did not appear in the 1870 US Census so I believe her death occured after June 1860 and before 1870
I know that Polly did not migrate with the Sharp Familybecause Hubbard and Mary were in Monroe County as early as 1824 from a marriage record.Hubbard Sharp married Mary Reeves on August 19, 1824 in Monroe County, Indiana.
This has been the only census in which Polly was found.
To make a long story short.Could someone give me some insight as to the relationship of the Sharp to the Smart Families
Any help would be greatly appreciated
