My great/great grandmother was Almira Carlisle who married Robert Nelson Sharp, s/o Seth G. Sharp & Rebecca Shropshire.
The Swedes formed the first settlement of Leesburg, New Jersey. About 1795, William Carlisle moved to Leesburg and found only three houses and a saw mill. William B. Carlisle, one of Leesburg's first settlers, came from Delaware to Leesburg as a young manwith only 75 cents in his pocket. During his lifetime he became the wealthiest man in the region, owning 24 farms and 75,000 acres of land. The old windmill was one of his whims. It was built on the waterfront in 1849. His grandson, William Carlisle , stated that his grandfather owned several water powered grist mills but wanted to see grain milled on his own property. An unsuccessful attempt was made to raise a fund for preservation of the mill, but the old landmark was destroyed by a storm and the wreckage was removed to make room for construction of ship ways.
