My father's grandparents, were Kate and Michael Sharkey. Michael was born in 1838 or 1839. His father was Thomas, a farmer in county Roscommon. When young, the family moved to Manchester, England due to the famine. There, he met Catherine Mitchell (father John), also from Ireland. They were married in 1861 in Stockport, 10 miles southeast of Manchester, in the Chapel of Phillip and James. In March 1864, they with their young daughter Mary emmigrated to the US on the clipper Chancellor - slow and cheap - after 30 days they arrived at the Port of New York. From there, they moved to Hamilton, Ohio where Michael worked as a laborer for the railroads. They eventually had 8 children, the youngest of whom was my gradfather Luke (1879). In addition to Mary (1862), children were Thomas (1864), John (1866), Annie (1867), Ella (1868), Michael J. (1871), William (1874), and Luke (1879).
We do not know the story of the family before 1861, but would like to if anybody knows. We also do not know much about the descendants of the children of Kate and Michael who survived - Anna died at 12 and William died in a train accident in 1910.
