My guess is that your Sharkey family was originally Chartier. There are a lot of Sharkeys in the U.S. and Western Canada who were originally Chartier. I think I know which family your Sharkey family belongs to. Ask your grandfather (Harold Thomas Sharkey) to give you the names of his father and grandfather. Also, ask him for the names of any brothers and sisters. With that information I think your Sharkey family will connect to the ones who moved from Quebec in the middle 1800's to Illinois.
