Michael, Caroline, & Moses Shorkey, Highgate, VT 1850
Has anybody been able to connect the following family in the 1850 census for VT, Franklin Co., Highgate to other Shorkey/Sharkey/Chartier families in VT or across Lake Champlain in Clinton Co., NY in 1850?
Micthael Shorkey 28 M (probably Michael)
Caroline Shorkey 25 F
Moses Shorkey 6 M
I am not descended from this Shorkey/Sharkey/Chartier family but am researching the Phillips family that appear to be living in the same dwelling (both families are in dwelling #4, Shorkeys above are family #4 and Phillips family below are family #5).My main question is how were these two families connected?I was hoping to uncover some clues that could help me learn more about my Phillips (or Philippe in some records written in French) ancestors.
Antwine Phillips 36 M
Katherine Phillips 30 F
Peter Phillips 21 M
Anwine Phillips Jr 16 M
Michael Phillips 14 M
Melnas Phillips 12 F
Favina Phillips 4 F
Janett Phillips 2 F
I am relatively certain this Phillips family in Highgate is the one I’m looking for, but names of children and dates vary from other sources (including Vermont Eugenics Survey). The Eugenics Survey lists the following children of Antoine Phillips and Catherine Cadaive: Peter, Antoine Jr., Michael, Mary, Philemon, Viso, Jane, Julia.
Note - This family was Indian (Abenaki). The 1850 census for Highgate lists in the “Color” column “B” for Antoine and “M” for the children.
Any additional info could be a potential clue and would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Todd
