WEINBERGER EDNA SHAPIRO, was born February 23, 1918 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Ethel and Hyman Shapiro, M.D. and passed away in Dallas on December 1, 2000. In 1936 she married the late Milton M. Weinberger, her husband of almost 60 years. They moved to Dallas in 1942 to join with family members in owning and operating Ward Drug Company which was ultimately to become the largest retail drug company in the metroplex prior to its sale in 1969. Along with her husband she was active in establishing the Weinberger Laboratory at Baylor University Medical Center; the Burn Unit, an Operating Theater and Mother/Child Pavilion at the Hadassah Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerulsalem; the first fetal EKG Unit at Saint Paul's Hospital and a medical library at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. She was a member of Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, for more than 63 years, and the President of its Dallas chapter and Southwest Region. She remained active in Hadassah affairs until the end of her life; she enormously enjoyed the simple routine of stuffing envelopes with her friends until only a few months ago. She is survived by her daughter, Beth Birenbaum, her son, Howard Weinberger, both of Dallas; five grandchildren, Edward Weinberger and Charles Birenbaum of Dallas, Charles Weinberger and Amy Weinberger of San Francisco and Michael Birenbaum of New York City; sister-in-law, Maryon Richman and brother-in-law Ervin Weinberger, both of Dallas. She was a long time member of Temple Emanuel and Congregation Shearith Israel. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 4, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home, Northwest Highway Chapel, Rabbi Gerald Klein officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hadassah at 10830 N. Central Expressway, Suite 308, Dallas, Tx. 75231.
