Our branch of the family (Fayette Co., Pa.), whether spelled Shanefelter or Shaneyfelter, had four syllables. I have heard people in my own family pronounce it several different ways, either shan a felt er (my immediate family) or shan ee felt er (some cousins) or even just randomly leaving off the "er" at the end when mentioning the name like it really didn't matter.

I changed the pronounciation of my name in college. I cut it to three syllables because Katrina Shanefelter was too much for the public to bear. I started pronouncing it phonetically as SHANE felt er. Interesting illustration on the different ways the name can change over the years.
