Adam and West Virginia...this if the first time I'm hearing these and I'd be very interested in hearing about the possibilities :) Did Adam moved to Lawrence Co., TN with the rest of the Shaffer family.

Unfortunately it seems John died before the 1860 census, but I did find him on the 1850 Lawrence Co., TN census. He and the family were enumerated as follows:

133 133 John CHEFFER 39 M Farmer VA
Rebecca 34 F
Jas C. 11 M
Sarah 10 F
George 7 M
Eliza A 5 F
Margaret 3 F
The whole family was indicated as born in Virginia.

George was my GG grandfather, the father of my great-grandmother Rebecca "Becky" Shaffer McGee. I've often wondered if Becky was named for her grandmother Rebecca Williams Shaffer .

Tracing the Shaffer family back past Lawrence County has been a mystery so far for me...that infamous brick wall...
