I am researching the history of the Shaffer Family in the area of Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania. I seek your assistance.

Below are the findings made thus far.

My Father:

Marvin Horace Shaffer (middle name also found to be Horris. (Source: Certificate of Birth, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics, Certificate of Birth No. 772377, dated 3 Sep 1942), B: 8 Mar 1908 in Glenville, York, PA, D: 20 Mar 1982, Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church, Fairfax Co., VA (Source: Certificate of Death, Registration Number 129, Certificate Number 430). At the time of his death he was retired and a resident at 11450 N. Shore Drive (Apt. 305) Reston, VA 22090.

Marvin Horace Shaffer married Helen Beatrice Trump on 24 Jun 1937 at Steltz’s Church “… in accordance with the license issued by the Clerk of the Orphan’s Court of York County, Pennsylvania, Numbered 53098.”

Helen Beatrice Trump was born 10 Sep 1906 in the Glenrock/Brodbecks area, near Jefferson, PA. A school teacher for some 35 years, she died 17 Sep 1971 at York Hospital, York, PA (Source: Local Registrar’s Certification of Death, No. 429595, Registered Number 1207, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Health, Vital Statistics, issued 20 Sep 1971). On 16 Jun 1924, she entered Millersville University of Pennsylvania, Millersville, PA, class of 1926 (Source: Special Collections and University Archives, Helen A. Glanser Library, Millersville University of Pennsylvania, Millersville, PA).

Marvin Steve Shaffer, the only child of this union, was born 6 Dec 1939, and presently resides in North Carolina.

My Grandfather:

John Ervin Shaffer, B: 3 Mar 1879, place of birth unknown, but assumed to be Pennsylvania. D: 15 Jun 1959, Gettysburg, PA. Buried:Bethlem (Steltz) Cemetery. Funeral services were held 17 Jun 1959 at the Geiple Funeral Home, Glen Rock, PA (Source: Funeral card produced by Geiple Funeral Home.) He was married twice. His second wife was Sadie Grace Zeigler, B: abt 1879. They were married 2 Dec 1900 in York, PA. (Source: Original Certificate of marriage, No. 12870, certified by Hiram J. Hillegass, Minister, that on 2 Dec 1900, John Ervin Shaffer and Sadie Grace Zeigler were “united in marriage in accordance with the License issued by the Clerk of the Orphan’s Court of York County, Pennsylvania, Numbered 12870.”) Three sons were born of this marriage: Merle R. Shaffer, B: 6 Mar 1904, D: unk. Merle last resided in Gettysburg, PA. Marvin H. Shaffer, B: 8 Mar 1908, D: 20 Mar 1982. Marvin resided in York, PA. In his last years he moved to Fairfax County, VA, where he subsequently passed away. Marion R. Shaffer, B: abt 1919, in Illinois, D: unk. Marion last resided in the Harrisburg, PA area.

“Baptisms at Bethlehem Reformed (Stiltz) Church, York, PA, 1895-1936”, reflect that Murl Russell Shaffer, was born 6 Mar 1904. (Source:

Sadie Grace Zeigler Shaffer died Saturday evening at 8:30 PM “…at the family residence in Manheim Township, near Sticks. She was aged 42 years, two months and nine days. Her death was due to complications and followed an illness of several months.” Her father, William K. Zeigler, York, and three sisters, Mrs. John Jacoby, York; Mrs. Henry Sweitzer, Lanark, Ill., and Miss Claudie Zeigler, York, survived her, along with her three sons through her marriage to John E. Shaffer. She was interred at Steltz’s church. (Source: Evening Sun, Hanover, PA, Monday, 23 Apr 1928, pg. 4).

His first wife was Alice Cramer, DPOB: Unk. They married abt 1896 when John E. was about 17 years of age. (Source: Report, page 113 of 133, Family Tree Maker’s Genealogy Site: User Home Page Report, 24 Apr 2002). John E. and Alice Cramer subsequently divorced? She married Miles R. Miller on 6 May 1902 (Source: York County Marriages – 1885-1906, application date: 6 May 1902, #14307, book & page: U-230). Miles Robert Miller, B: 15 Sep 1876 of P.O. Box 72, Glen Rock, York, PA, an employee of the “Penna R.R. Co.” , Harrisburg, PA. His wife is Alice R. Miller. (Source: Draft Registration Card, World War One, 9 Sep 1918) In the U.S. Census of Glenrock Borough, York Co., PA, on 9 Apr 1930, she appears as a resident in her parents’ home, Oliver H. and Mary A. Cramer. Alice K. Cramer’s “marital condition” is indicated by a “D” or divorced. Her age is 49 years. No further information pertaining to Alice Cramer.

John E. Shaffer died at age 80 years in the home of his eldest son, Merl R. Shaffer (note spelling of “Merl” compared to “Murl” above. A 1910 U.S. Census reflects “Mearl R.”), at 401 York Street, Gettysburg, PA. A retired farmer, he had “…resided for 30 years on Glen Rock RD3. He was a member of United Church of Christ congregation of Steltzes Union Church.” Mentioned among the surviving members of his family are his two brothers, “Howard and Harry Shaffer, both of Glen Rock RD3.” (Source: Newspaper clipping entitled “John E. Shaffer, 80, Formerly of Sticks Vicinity, Succumbs,” unknown source, undated).

The World War 1 Draft Registration Card for John E. Shaffer indicates that he registered for the draft at “Local Board, For County of Carroll, State of Illinois, Savanna, Illinois,” (Source: WW1 Draft Registration Card, #3281, 1917-1918 Record, Roll – 1452435)

John E. Shaffer and his second wife, Sadie G. Shaffer of Manheim Township, executed a mortgage for “two tracts of land in Manheim Twp York Co. Pa.” that was recorded 4 Jun 1925 in the Mortgage Book, Vol. 8 R, Page 215, York County, PA. This mortgage was satisfied 25 Feb 1956. Within that section of the Mortgage where the tracts of land are described appears the name W.E. Shaffer; the latter not being further identified (Source: Original of the mortgage document)

Jacob Ruhle Shaffer, B: 6 May 1846, South Codorus Twp., York Co., PA. D: 22 Feb 1927, Codorus Twp., York Co., PA. He married Sarah Ann Bollinger, B: 1 Nov 1847, Baltimore Co., MD, (another place of birth has been found to be Codorus, York, PA) D: 9 Jul 1902, Codorus Twp., York Co., PA, abt. 1868. She was the daughter of Jacob Bollinger and Catherine Bowman AKA: Bauman. Adam (NMN) Shaffer, B: 24 Jan 1796, York Co., PA. D: 14 Nov 1871, in South Codorus Twp., York Co., PA. He is buried at Steltz Union Cemetery, York, PA. In about 1828, in York, PA (Source: Family Group Record, Family Search, International Genealogical Index), he married Susanna Ruhl, B: 7 Dec 1803, York Co., PA. (Source: Ancestry World Tree Project,, 25 Aug 2001). D: 29 Nov 1869 in South Codorus Twp., York Co., PA. Susanna Ruhl was christened at St. Peters Reformed (Church), York, PA. She is buried at Steltz Union Cemetery, York , PA (Source: Family Search Individual Record).

The surname of Adam Shaffer has been seen as Sheffer and Schaffer.

       “George R. Shaffer, farmer and dairyman, in Shrewsbury Township, was born in Codorus Township March 21, 1841. His parents, Adam and Susanna (Ruhle) Shaffer, were natives of York County, and of German descent, and had eleven children, seven boys and four girls. George R. was brought up on the farm, and educated at the common schools. At twenty-one years of age he began the butcher business and followed it for four years. January 10, 1867, he was married in Shrewsbury, to Rebecca Nonamaker, of York County, and had six children, one of whom died young: Henry Clinton, Jennie Florence, Arthur Ervin and Zura Alverta are living. Mr. Shaffer moved to his present farm of 100 acres, at the time he was married, working it until 1880, when he also commenced the dairy business. He is a member of the Reformed Church, while his wife belongs to the Lutheran Church.
