Hello Judy,
It's very nice to meet you.We are third cousins.I'm afraid I never met any of my Shackleton relatives (other than my grandfather and his children) until quite recently.A few years ago I met up with Dottie (Balzer) Honer, who is decended from Lily, the first of Harold's siblings to be born on this side of the ocean. Were it not for her, I might never have even known most of what little I do know about the Shackleton family.I know almost nothing about your line. One family story, though: my grandmother remembers Thomas (her father-in-law) telling how he would get back at the older boys for their teasing by reminding them that at least he was a citizen because he was born here and he didn't have to be naturalized. It was good natured teasing that adult brothers engage in, nothing malicious.Thomas died before I was born, so I never met him, and my grandfather and I never got along, so I'm afraid I don't have much in the way of oral tradition on the Shackleton family, and as I said, I never met any of my grandfather's family.
Here is what little I have on your line from Harold down:
Harold Shackleton Sr. b. abt 1874 in England d. abt 1927He was a "stationary engineer" and was naturalized in 1892 He married Martha Manson b. Mar 25, 1883 in PA d. Mar 1974 in Lansdale, Montgomery Co., PAIn the 1920 census Martha notes that her father was born in England, mother in PA.
Harold and Martha had four children that I know of:
Ruth b. abt 1913 in PA
Donald b. Nov 7, 1913 in PA d. Aug 14, 2001 in Apex NC
Hannah b. abt 1915 in PA and may have married a man named Beck
Harold Jr. b. Jan 4, 1917 in PA d. Aug 22, 1996 in Lansdale, Montgomery Co., PA
Donald Shackleton may have been an ordained minister. At some point he may have lived in Fox Chase, PA.He married a woman named Mary.
Donald and Mary had two children that I know of:
Harold Paul who married a woman named Grace
William D.who married a woman named Gail
That's every last bit of information I have on your line, and now I can add Judy as a daughter of Harold Paul.If you'd like to fill in our trees, we could swap emails to keep the information of living folks private.I'll also be sure to let Dottie know that we found a cousin on one of the other branches. She be tickled.
I recently found the grave site of Jonas, Hannah, and Ethel Shackleton, within a few miles of my home, in a cemetery I'd visited before.I'm sorry I don't know where any of the folks in your line are buried yet.
You have cousins from my line living in Jacksonville and Raleigh, by the way.I was down visiting twice this past summer.Perhaps we could arrange lunch next summer when I come to visit again. We are also considering spending Christmas this year down your way.Maybe then?
In any event, it's very nice to have met you, and I hope to hear from you soon.
Lou
Horsham PA
