ALL OF THE THINGS THAT YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT (WELL ALMOST ALL, LOL) "THE FIRST HENRY SHACKLEFORD" AND HIS DESCENDANTS BUT WAS AFRAID TO ASK!!!
Hi Cousin's,
Part of the WEBPAGE, ....see URL at end of message.... is written in a light hearted manner, especially when discussing, some of the other SHACKLEFORD lines.....but I guess you should assume that there is some truth in there, at least I THINK SO.
I am embarrassed by the Web Page, that I have placed on the net with Reference to the FIRST HENRY SHACKLEFORD. This draws the question........if it looks so bad, why put it "out there"? Well the information is as honest, and correct as I can produce, prior to our trip to Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland. I had promised some Cousin's that I would share this data before January 1, 2001.
Except for a Web site that I prepared on My family.com, my experience with HTML was nil, until I began this Page.
,During the past 4-5 weeks I have worked on the page, added data, and edited over and over again.
Without going into detail, let me say that I sweated bullet's trying to transfer, or download etc.... from Netscape to Rootsweb , carrying both the Webpage, and the html page that would allow me to expand on, edit, et. cetera...
Yesterday, I tried a different approach to get this Web page over to Rootsweb...... and I am not sure which of the steps that I changed, ....( I employed unorthodox manipulations,)..... added, or.... deleted that made the significant difference...... from previous efforts, but this time data moved right on to the Rootsweb Freepages both text and html et.... cetera.. Now some folks refer to this phenomenon as serendipity, " a "fortuitous accident"..
....but the truth is, the Good Lord tapped me on the shoulder,.......(No!!!, I didn't hear his voice) .... and HE said,"Dummy, you'll never get this done by yourself, move aside and I'll do it"..... Incidently this has happened to me throughout my life.
Could be, that I know a little about,how 'HE' did it.....but very little...lets leave that aside, and hope that Roots web will accept 'the page' as is for a sufficient time period that all interested Shackleford descendents can make a copy of the page before the Rootsweb Administrator purges. Re: Copyright notes........
Until I proof read the WebPage, I felt fairly good about the successful transfer... . While reading, I discovered MORE.... error's in spelling, formatting, lack of clearity et..cetera....?? than I remembered seeing after the last editing effort, prior to the Transfer, How could that happen???................
.......easy....,I transfered third from the last, Edition !!!instead of Transfering edition ........No
26, I transfered Edition no 23. ..., why not step back and transfer the "good Copy" Edition .??...Noooo!! is the current copy a little 'sloppy'? yes it is...., but We leave for North Carolina, Maryland and Virginia in the morning,.... no time...., but the real reason, is the good Lord helped, me once on this, and I can't ask again until I have everything 'just right'.
I will include a few edited paragraphs that are the most difficult to understand on the current Webpage. Hopefully this will help some when you reach these Pargraphs as you read.
These paragaphs are past the midway point of the narrative, and the total narrative is about 107,000 KB My suggestion would be to forget these edited paragraphs, until you arrive at this point on the Webpage..

Next we examine ESSEX COUNTY DEED BOOK 17, pp. 254-257.
[After searching for so many years for Documentation that seemed as though it would never come!!!!!!!!!! ..................EUREKA............................................................
Re-edited version starts here....
Authors Notes.........
Assuming that the FIRST HENRY SHACKLEFORD SR [1] was born about 1683, and allow him to live to be about 75-80, as many others in the Gene Pool did he might well father children into the middle 1700's, assuming a wife of child-bearing year's.
This would eliminate HENRY SHACKLEFORD JR [2]'s mother that gave birth to HENRY JR. ca. 1702. ...' It is possible that if THE FIRST HENRY SHACKLEFORD fathered children, other than HENRY JR [2] they were born in the early 1700's, but we need to leave the door open when studying some of the SHACKLEFORD'S in the 4-5 county area of Spotsylvania, Caroline, Orange, Culpeper, etc. that were likely born 1730-1750. Of course they could be children of HENRY SHACKLEFORD JR [2],BUT we know of two HENRY SHACKLEFORD'S that were born ca. 1730-1745,
(don't want to leave the imprssion that I am laboring with the thought that all Henry's have a Father named Henry...) not likely both children were son's of HENRY SHACKLEFORD JR[2]], unless of course JR[2] WAS PLAGUED BY THE GEORGE FOREMAN SYNDROME.
We can be sure that the Henry Shackleford born Orange County 1732, was not a son of the FIRST HENRY SHACKLEFORD SR[1](NOT LIKELY TO HAVE TWO SON'S NAMED HENRY..... Henry b Orange County Virginia 1732, could of course be a grandson, from a biolgical standpoint.
There are other Shacklefords that could be the son of The FIRST HENRY SHACKLEFORD. this is discussed later.
There was another part to the equation that we will get into later, "IT" colored my thinking, and because of 'IT I considered that the FIRST HENRY SHACKLEFORD left no descendents.) I had been searching for these descendents for so long, and the habit was so
ingrained, I convinced myself that there HAD to be at least one son ...more than likely the Good Lord convinced me) or I had wasted many years trying to climb a brickwall, actually Wasted is too strong a word.....W enjoyed those days.
We will have some details about what "IT" is, when we reach that part of the narrative, but we will not get into a discussion of what IS, IS in this paper.(grin)..
I mentioned in the early part of the Narrative, this is between "kinfolks", not meant to be Formal, Fair to Note however that the:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
DOCUMENTATION listed is VERY FORMAL, AND EXACT.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
VERY VERY IMPORTANT PIECE OF PAPER!!!!!!!!!HERE ON THE WEBPAGE.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Further down the line there are several (4-5) paragraphs that are jumbled, and poorly organized, the following will help some when you reach that point on the Webpage.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
author's note.......
If Donnie and Dusty had been more patient, LOL..... I could have done this 'paper'in a more leisurely manner in 2003-4..........
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Please understand the next 3-5 Paragraphs or'capsule's
ARE NOT GENEALOGY !! THEY ARE, I WONDER IF.....? .......................
These are the areas that we are Researching now. I am always apprehensive when I include SPECULATION based on little if any evidence. There could well be 2-3 Shackleford Lines represented in Pittsylvania,and Henry County VA
details later...My fear is that someone will skip through, or skim over this ......... see one of the names listed below, and not realize the nature of their inclusion, then 2 weeks later, John Shackleford, (Old Colonial John ) husband of Anne White is included with KNOWN descendants of the FIRST HENRY SHACKLEFORD. (not that I don't think, that is a distinct possibility) The reason for including the "could be's" is to share the area that We will be researching in Virginia in October 2000.
There are four, maybe 5 additional SHACKLEFORD'S that I continue to work on very seriously in an effort to tie them to the FIRST HENRY SHACKLEFORD CA.1683 .
Most of these 5 Shackleford's had some connection to
Caroline, Culpeper,Spotsylvania, Orange, Pittsylvania, and Henry County Virginia.
They include, Henry Shackleford (born c 1732) Orange County, Virginia, Edmund Shackleford Lived in Orange County, Virginia m. Judith Eastin, Both this HENRY, and
EDMUND moved to Elbert County Georgia, ca. 1790's John Shackleford, Minister/Evangelist extraodinaire' born
Caroline County 1850, later moved to Kentucky. I still work on (Old Colonial) John Shackleford m. Ann White, Served in the Virginia Militia under Col. Peter Hogg and Capt Kirtley in the Frence and Indian war in 1755. Known in Europe as the Seven Year War, 1755-1763. Samuel Henry Shackleford that was born in Caroline County in 1803,..,,NOTE:I see data that ties him to a Shackleford line that spent most of their time in North Carolina,....This line may be so well documented that I am wasting my time studying this Samuel Henry Shackleford......but want to check Caroline County Virginia "Order Books", the only County Records still extant in Caroline. Important to note I need much study on this line, and its just a thought now.
I think it would be realistic to include Thomas and Catherine 'Caty' Shackleford parents of Jonathan Lyon, and Richard Dunford, Shackleford that moved their Families from Pittsylvania County, Virginia to Marengo
County, Alabama.If I remember correctly Pittsylvania County, Virginia was taken from Halifax County, Virginia. close to Dinwiddie County Line
There are some indication,[I need to be stronger than some indication.........................
I think I have documentation that descendants of both Roger Shackleford b. 1700, died 1779 King and Queen County Virginia, and also descendants of Major Richard Shackleford b. 1700(some notes say 1710) King and
Queen county Virginia, died in King and Queen County Virginia 1773. Left most of the estate to William Shackleford , but included Roger,(none to son Richard??, (we can argue about this one later) spent some time in this area Halifax, Dinwiddie, maybe Pittsylvania, and Henry County Virginia.
WILLIAM SHACKLEFORD (Possibly descendant of Roger and Cary Baker Shackleford) in Pittsylvania County Virginia in 1770, very interesting, I think I can document that this William lived in Caroline County Virginia at one time, Will spend some time in search of data in Culpeper, Spotsylvania, and Caroline County in October.
ASSUMING... that Old Colonial JOHN b. ca. 1735 (can't be 1745), HENRY b. Orange County 1732, and EDMUND that was in Orange county, and Married Judith Eastin, Descend from the FIRST HENRY SHACKLEFORD SR[1] then we need a brother to HENRY SHACKLEFORD JR[2] b. ca. 1702 in so far as HENRY SHACKLEFORD Orange County ,c.1732 French and Indian War would have to be grandson of the FIRST HENRY SHACKLEFORD SR[1].I may have covered this earlier.
If any of you wager a bit,....the odds favor that the FIRST HENRY SHACKLEFORD SR [1] had a son named JOHN!!. ..... Why?.......just betting odds.!!! John, was/is the most common given name in the Shackleford Line's that I have researched, and probably the most common Given name in the Colonies.....or at least the Southern Colonies. Seems that I wind up qualifying every statement, early childhood mortality rates were so high in those days. often we don't know about those John's, Roger's etc that only lived for a short time....
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Important to note: With the Exception of Court Documentation, 95% of the data on the Web Site is off the "Top of my Head", my memory is resonably good in the Genealogy area??????, In the Final Edition of the FIRST HENRY SHACKLEFORD I will be much more explicit date and place-wise.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Who was the John Shackleford that Gave a farm to EDMUND SHACKLEFORD....not as part of a will but with a LEGAL DOCUMENT to pass this property to Edmund, with the understanding that, JOHN,wife Anne and his daughter SARAH, could live out their lives on the property. As I remember this was in ORANGE County Virginia in 1776.
There are things that point to This Edmund as being the son of John (Old Colonial)and Anne White Shackleford.
I certainly question that Old Colonial John was part of this transaction. Old Colonial John in his will about 1818 does not list an Edmund, or a Sarah. For those that use the argument that the reason he didn't list an Edmund in his will was because Edmund had been given his share, previously, won't wash...Even in those instances , almost invarably the Legatee will be mentioned with the note that his share et. cetera.... From my standpoint, we should be able to eliminate Old Colonial John and Anne White Shackleford as the parents, or donor of land to this Edmund Shackleford.
authors notes:
To better understand why my writing is 'slanted' in the next couple of paragraphs requires some knowledge of the various "School's of Thought" Re; Shackelford/ Shackleford Genealogy....With tongue planted firmly into cheek.(gotta be a fair amount of truth)I offer expression of my opinion based on my firm beliefs in most instances, but will hopefully avoid a heavy atmosphere.
I hope all will keep in mind that this paper is being presented to those who have been studying Shackleford genealogy for two weeks, or 2 years, or 40 years etc.....
I would suggest that much of the data on the WEBPAGE will be much clearer after the fifth or sixth reading.
LOL, I laugh when I write this line..... but we do cover a lot of ground....., and those who have not fought this battle day after day, will experience some confusion when faced with so many Shackleford names that are so similar......... No one promised that this would be easy.
There was a John Shackleford, wife Anne, dealing in large land transactions (2000 acres etc) in Orange County, Virginia as early as 1750.... (SCM, Vol 3 NO. 9, pg 260,TK Jones,)
This is the John that deeded the Farm, to Edmund, in 1776 that was discussed a paragraph back. This John was surely born no later than c.1730, and more than likely He was born much earlier than 1730... (not many 20 year olds in those days dealing in acreage's up to 2000 ac.) one school of thought would give his birth 1700 +/-
We know his name is John Shackleford , wife Anne,....
Anne who ??....Lyne ????? but who were his parents??
There is one easy road to take in these cases of
.....'who was His Mommy and Daddy'...The answer of Course is:
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
SURELY. He must descend from, James son of ROGER THE IMMIGRANT that married Elizabeth Robbins......
..................'A gentle Gotcha' !!!
authors notes... the rule is as follows, if you have an early Shackleford, particularly a John, and you don't know who his parents were...don't sweat it.....oh!!! yes I know him..... His dad was James that married Elizabeth Robbins in Christchurch Parish, Gloucester/ Matthews County Virgina about 1687. ..............
( I suppose it is generally agreed that the John and Anne mentioned in this paragraph..... Leads to a similar case)
Roger Shackleford born 1700, married Carey Baker, considered by Robert Baylor Shackleford , in "the Shackleford Family" to be a son of Francis Shackleford, b. 1665 Essex county Land Dealing in the early 1700's another son of Roger the immigrant (no argument)married Sarah Virginia Lewis,et cetera.... some one then decided that this Roger Shackleford b. ca. 1700 was not the son of Francis...but actually a son of James and Elizabeth Robbin's Shackelford. Are you kidding me?? ... .............
might be true.
Minor Winn Gibson, was of the opinion that the John Shackleford that married Anne Lyne in King and Queen County Virginia, was a son of the John Shackleford, that immigrated to the Colonies in 1649, and settled in King and Queen County. Virginia !!!....'I think this is very,very possible' !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Robert Baylor [RBS] Shackelford, in his book said, can't be!!............ with regards to the paragraph above.... The John Shackleford that married Ann Lyne was a Son of John Shackleford, b. 1670 the son of Roger 1658 immigrant . Unfortunately, it was proven that Roger's son John that married Ann Livingston and moved to Carteret County, NC and his Son John Was in Carteret County NC as well. !!!! so the John that married Anne Lyne could not be as RBS stated in his book.?????????? Never Fear......................
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
...Always Ready,......with another John Shackleford that decends from Roger Shackleford the immigrant........................Hey,...wait just a minute, !!! .........Roger the immigrants son James that married Elizabeth Robbins had a son John about the right age !!!! ... you guessed it....... ... James' son John was the Shackleford that married Ann Lyne.
Most Shackleford genealogy internet searchers today accept that the John Shackelford that married Ann Lyne in King and Queen County, Virginia was a son of James and Elizabeth Robbins Shackelford, and a Grandson of Roger and Mary Palmer Shackelford.......... .
I am not ready to concede to this scenario.. LOL..As One of my granddaughters, having heard me say, SHOW ME THE MONEY, told her sister, I never thought I would ever hear my granddad quoting Jerry Mcguire. LOL..
SHOW ME THE DOCUMENTATION!!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
One more point, I see many places on the internet that basically state that Shackelford's in Spotsylvania Orange, Culpeper, and Caroline County Virginia in the Colonial period MUST surly descend from James and Elizabeth Robbins Shackleford.......As a result of A mass exodus from Gloucester, to Spotsylvania County Virginia 1736... If you take the time and read Henning's Statutes , specific's later, you will have a better understanding of this part of the research.
Those of us that descend from The FIRST HENRY SHACKLEFORD , that patented land in Spotsyvania and Caroline County Virginia in 1715 know differently.!! We have the documentation!!
Incidently...THE WEB PAGE WAS ORIGINALLY PLANNED TO HAVE TWO PARTS... THE FIRST HENRY SHACKLEFORD.. AND AN EVALUATION OF THE BOOK, "THE SHACKLEFORD FAMILY' BY ROBERT BAYLOR SHACKLEFORD...
This next Narrative of about 75-80KB. T will come later.
