Hi Pat,
Alas, I fear I too can slip. In rushing trying to leave for a meeting, I erred when I said that the will of Henry Sewall's executor was named Mary - the will clearly says Jane. I feel badly about adding to the confusion. Having goofed once, I reread the will and still see no mention of a Thomas anywhere in the document.
I think we agree that there must be two Mary Sewalls, one who married Chandler and Brent and another who married Handy.
I do have the extract of Stephen Barnes will and your email correspondent and it agree (Baldwin, 1:207). The reversion means that the portion left to wife Jane goes to the kids when she dies (as opposed to being her property outright, which would allow her to disinherit the children). However the debate between Bond and Barnes requires examination of the originals given the discrepancy between Skordas and Torrence (Bond) and Baldwin (Barnes).
You refer to multiple wills for a Henry Sewall, but I find only one - the one I extracted (and of which an extract is found at Baldwin, 1:31). Your description of the alleged will of Henry Sewall with the same date as Patuxent River Henry's will and naming children Mary and Thomas sounds suspiciously like the will of Stephen Barnes. May one of your sources somehow have confused these two documents?
Henry was certainly a common name, even for a king or two. I see it used by the following early settlers
1. Henry Sewall, Newbury, 1634/5 [father and son]
2. Henry Sewall of Sewalls Point, Virginia, d. 1644
3. Henry Sewall, Patuxent River, 1661 [nephew of the elder Henry Sewall of Newbury, Mass.
4. Henry Sewall, 1664, who may (or may not) have been the testator of Anne Arundel County in 1691-1705 [no dau. Mary or son Thomas].
Best, Eben
