Almost everything I have is from census records, with a couple gravestone inscriptions thrown in (Melvin/Melville and Justin). Samuel Burrill Jr., 31, a farmer, and Susan, 35, were listed at Corinna in 1850, along with Julia A. Sewall, 22, Melvin C., 15, and Marin C.W., 13 (Penobscot Co., 55B). The "Jr." matches the Vassalboro marriage record. Samuel Burrell, 41, a tavern keeper, and Susan, 45, and Martin Sewall, 22, Freeman McPherson, 17, all born in Maine, [and others], are listed at Groveland, Illinois, in 1860 (Lasalle Co., 691). Samuel Burrell, 51, and Susan, 53, both born in Maine, are listed with the family of Martin M. and Cathrine Sewell at New Rutland, Illinois, in 1870 (LaSalle Co., 240A–B). Samuel Burrill, age 61, is listed at Corinna, with a younger wife, Clara, 49, in 1880 (Penobscot Co., e.d. 14, 545A), and he could still be our man, as a Samuel Burrill married Mrs. Clara Day at Corinna in 1878 (VRs). Also 1900 (Penobscot Co., e.d. 93, 44B). Martin N. and Kate W. Sewall are listed at Minneapolis, Minn., in the census of 1880 (Hennepin Co., e.d. 248, 372A) and 1900 (Hennepin Co., e.d. 82, 159B). The age pattern, Susan being 3-5 years older than Samuel, as well as place of birth, makes me think these entries all refer to the same people. And, the last place Samuel and Susan were listed was in [New] Rutland, Illinois. You can also see why I am confused about how Julia fits in, being only 13 years younger than Susan. Could your correspondent give a transcription of Susan's gravestone inscription? In your first post, you said there was also a son George -- I have not run across him. What more do you know? In the Sewall family I am working on, a Sarah Jane Sewall married a Sumner Burrill at Corinna in 1836. They too ended up in Illinois by 1870, but in a different county. Do you know anything about Sumner? Has anyone done a good study of the Burrills? Notify Administrator about this message?
