Apology and Penance of Samuel Sewall (1652-1730)
Posted by: Eben W. Graves (ID *****6826) Date: March 09, 2006 at 18:00:54

For a forthcoming book, I am looking for documentation of the penance that Chief Justice Samuel Sewall is said to have imposed on himself at the time he apologized for his participation in the witch trials of 1692; viz., that either on the day of his apology or from that day forward he wore a sack-cloth or hairshirt garment under his regular clothes.

Any documentation, contemporary or historical, is solicited.
