David,
Welcome to genealogy. You'll find that it can be addictive. You're starting the right way by calling your Dad to learn what he knows. Also talk to grandparents, aunts, and uncles.
In just a few minutes I found evidence of what may be your family on the internet. A marriage of Schuyler Sewall to Virginia LaRochelle, perhaps uncles named Ransford A. and Prince E. Sewall, marriages by a Ransford L. Sewall to Stella Dunton and Shirley Pullen, and a marriage by John W. Sewall to Edith May Wheeler. Edith seems to have had a lot of children by an earlier husband, Peleg Bradford. John W. Sewall may have been a Junior. The family I found seems to sprout from Carmel, Maine, with some evidence of Connecticut connections, too.
I am working on a book on the descendants of Henry sewall of Massachusetts, from whom many, but not all, Maine Sewalls are descended. I do not have John W. and Edith (Wheeler) Sewall in my file, but if you can push back one or two generations earlier than John W. Sewall, say into the mid-to-late 1800s, I may be able to establish a link.
When you talk to your Dad, write down what you hear, and see if he can provide dates and places (even guesses and ranges will help you).
As there may be some concerns about posting data about living relatives, feel free to email me, if you'd prefer.
Post what you find out, and we'll go from there!
Best wishes, Eben W. Graves
