Frederick Severs of Muhlenberg
I recently ran across some unintential errors concerning the family of Frederick Severs of Muhlenberg Co KY.and would like to pass on some info. Several people have put forward the belief that Catherina Botts Rhodes wife of Frederick Severs was the mother of all his children and suggested a birthdate of 1748 and death of 1837. Katie Severs, as she was known was the mother of a set of twin girls and one son, the last of Fredericks children. The son. Gabriel Severs was my ancestor. To give proof to this I include the following brief obit which was published in the McLeansboro Times-Leader of Hamilton Co IL:
Worlds Oldest Living Woman Dies
Notified today of the death of Katie Severs of near Horeb Muhlenberg Co KY. The wife of Frederick Severs a Rev War soldier and early settler of the Green River area of Kentucky she was injured in a fall last week while returning from church and while seeming to rally she passed into the hands of the Lord this past Sunday. Mrs Severs, grandmother of local residents A.W. and M.T. Severs, had only been presented with a plack last year by the govenor of Kentucky which proclaimed her to be the world's oldest woman having been 117 at that time. She had just reached her 118th year, having been born in Bedford Co Pennsylvania in 1780 and married at 16 to the aforementioned Frederick. She travelled to the Green River country in a wagon train and yet lived to see many travel by train in a few hours over a journey that took her months. Her huisband died early in this century and in his memory she donned black and wore it until her death. She will be sorely missed by many of her friends and family who will keep her memory forever green.
The above obit was from the paper published Oct 20 1898. I am the great grandson of the M.T. Severs mentioned in the obit, and as he himself lived to be 100 he passed some things on to me about the family.
As Katie was born in 1780 she could not be the mother of the earlier Severs children. According to family tradition, she was 16 and Frederick 62 when they married. This is quite possible as Frederick had grown sons at that time and according to family he was born in 1734 in Fredericktown MD before removing with his father Hans Pieter Sevrs to what became Bedford Co PA.
