BENJAMIN JESSE SEVERNS (also known as Jesse Severns, and Benjamin Severns, Jr.) & WIFE CHRISSEY
(BenjaminJesseSeverns.txt)
To the reader: The information listed in the chronology of this Benjamin Jesse Severns does not all belong to one person, but has been included at this time in an effort to try to identify the different persons. Most of the information in this document was provided by Pat Cooper, December 1998, and by others.Compiled by Alice Severns. (information in parenthesis by Alice or Pat)
Note: Additional information added by Pat Cooper on 12 March, 1999.
1757 - Jesse Severns born before 1757.
1775 - Bucks County, PA tax records; JESSE SEVERNS, single
1777 - Oaths of Allegiance and Fidelity to the State of Pennsylvania; Bucks County, PA; 30 June 1777; John Vandergrift of Bensalem, Benjamin Severns of Bensalem, Lewis Rue of Bensalem. (This Benjamin was probably the son of Daniel Severns because of his association with Lewis Rue.)
1777 - Bensalem Twp tax records; JESSE SEVERNS, single male
1778 - a JESSE SEVERNS of Bensalem Twp, Bucks County, PA took the Oath of Allegiance and Fidelity to the State of Pennsylvania at Bucks County, PA on May 5, 1778, along with Jacob Severns of Bensalem.
1778 - Bensalem tax records; JESSE SEVERNS, single male; taxed 1 pound, 10 shillings, and 15 (shillings? or pence)

1779 - Bensalem tax records; JESSE SEVERNS, single
1780 - Bensalem tax records; JESSE SEVERNS, single
1780 - Census of Bensalem Twp lists JESSE SEVERNS
1781 - Bensalem tax records; JESSE SEVERNS, single
1781 - Bensalem tax records; BENJAMIN Severns, 125 acres; 3 horses, 5 cows, no servants.
I will suggest a couple of explanations as to why the names Benjamin and Jesse were interchanged in the tax records on the same property.
I believe that Jesse's name was Benjamin Jesse Severns, and he commonly used his middle name, Jesse, in an attempt to differentiate himself from the other two Benjamin Severns living in the same township - his father, and the son of Daniel and Catherine Severns, probably a cousin.
It is also probable that Jesse and his father or cousin Benjamin were partners in farming together (renting),the 125 acres that Catherine Vansant-Severns inherited from her father; and that sometimes Jesse would pay the taxes, and sometimes Benjamin the father or cousin would paythem.
I would submit that the cousin may have been the more logical partner because this Benjamin was the son of Catherine so it would be more likely that he would farm his mother's land than another relative, unless he was sufficiently occupied with a farm or other business of his own. In that case it would be better for his mother to rent out the property to relatives. You will notice in the tax records I have listed under 1793 & 1794, Benjamin Sr and Benjamin Jr pay an almost identical amount in taxes. That may indicate a partnership with each partner paying an equal share of the taxes.
Another thought is that the county accessors & tax collectors used these names intermittantly, knowing that a partnership existed between the two persons, OR that one assessor or tax collector knew the person as Benjamin and another knowing him as Jesse.
Also, we may note that Jesse Severns served in the military for a few years; whether actively or on reserve we don't know, but during this time his partner, father or cousin, may have taken over the majority of the management of the 125 acres. (above comments by Alice)

"According to the tax record book, which was transcribed I believe by Terry Neeley and Frances Wise-Waite, the pages were found folded within some of the records for years that were dated, but some of them had no dates on them. They compared the records for preceeding years, and the following years, and concluded that the records were from around the same era, thus they guessed as to the dates. That does not mean that they were not from the 1790's, it just means that we will probably never know for sure whether they were. The records for that area have been so spotty, and those that they do have are very often incomplete." 1 female 26-45 years (born 1754-1773 wife Chrissey?)
1 female 16-26 years (born 1773-1783)
1 male 10-16 years (born 1783-1789)
(These two younger males are probably Nicholas born ca. 1791 according to his descendants.Nicholas appearing on the singles list for the first time in 1815 in Bristol Township, BCPa.The other is most likely Jesse Jr., who appeared on census records as a single male in Bristol for the year 1817, along with his brother Nicholas.Using their singles appearance, I am assuming Nicholas to be the elder of the two. 1 male under 10 years (born 1789-1799)

Pa. daughter of Abraham Vandergrift and Femmeltje Hufte.) The other reason is that the Benjamin who is located on census records 1800 in Lower Makefield, is probably Daniel's Benjamin, I think.Knowing the birth date of Abraham [1794] and knowing that he was a descendant of Daniels Benjamin, is the only thing that I have to go by.On the 1800 census in Lower Makefield, the Benjamin Severns listed there has 2 males under 10 years, while the other Benjamin in Bensalem has no males, other than himself.Jesse is listed under his Jesse Severns name, thus eliminating him as either one of the Benjamins.Benjamin's (son of Daniel) wife Mary appears on census records in Bensalem, 1810 with a male 16-26 years old, Abraham's age.Marriage record of Nancy/Ann Severns and Abraham Severns states that they were both of Bensalem.Opinions?
