It's been ten years since you posted here, but I've just come across the fact that my grandfather's brother, John Thomas Severn, a policeman with the Port of London Authority, was drowned in London Docks, on Christmas eve, 1914.
Curiously he was on patrol with another officer, William Ware, when they both fell into the dock during a thick fog.
I don't suppose this William Ware was any relation to you? I'm wondering now if they might have been cousins.
